Bliss ball recipes

Bliss balls are a delicious and healthy snack made from all natural ingredients.  Easy to make and simple to pack, they are perfect for when you want a sweet little treat, that isn’t too wicked.  They are portable, so are good for picnics, packed lunches or a snack during or after exercise. This makes them great for golf, yoga and horse riding to name a few excursions.

You can make up your own concoctions based on a combination of raw nuts, seeds, dried fruit, desiccated coconut, citrus juice, citrus zest, cacao powder, rolled oats, nut butters, tahini and oil (coconut, macadamia or avocado).  The right consistency is when you can roll the mixture into a small ball.  Remove any cracks as these can split the balls when they firm up.  If they feel too crumbly, add a little more liquid from citrus juice, oil or a splash of water. When using chia seeds, you will need to add more liquid, as they expand when moist.

They should be sweet enough if you include dried fruit.  If not, add sweetness with a little maple syrup or honey.  Remove any hard bits from dried fruit where it met the stalk.  If very dry, you can soak them in hot water for 15-30 minutes to soften, then drain and use.

You can eat the balls as they are, or roll them in various toppings – such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, desiccated coconut, finely chopped nuts, cocoa powder or melted chocolate – to coat them.  They can be any size, from a large marble to a golf ball.

These are vegan, so long as you don’t use honey.

Experiment and have some fun!
